Homework Policy

Students have homework every weeknight. All students are required to read at least 30 minutes per night Monday-Friday. Moreover, each student should have "I Can" statements written in their planners. These statements are designed to foster communication between parents and students. Please discuss these statements with your student to assess whether they really can do them. If not, please make notes in the planner. I review these statements and planners every school day.

I expect these tasks to take approximately 40 minutes (30 minutes reading and at least 10 minutes reviewing I Can statements). Jordan School district recommends 10 minutes per grade level and this is pretty close. However, I carefully review the latest research on the cost vs. benefits of homework. I believe that most research suggests homework should be limited in elementary, and I believe 40 minutes is usually sufficient.

If you believe that your students does not receive enough homework, I invite you to help your student complete extra credit. You may do any of the suggested projects or tasks or you may plan, recommend, and complete your own.

Please allow you student time to get sufficient physical activity and sleep at home. He/she will be a better, more prepared student if that happens.

Thank you for your help, and please do not hesitate to notify me of any questions or concerns regarding this homework policy.
